Banksia blechnifolia

Description

Dwarf spreading shrub with horizontal branches from south-west of Perth in sand plain country sometimes associated with mallee.  Annual rainfall 16" per year.. Dusky-red flower heads 6'-7". Usually pollinated by ants. Flowers 3-5 years from seed.  Easy grower. Grows best in light to medium well-drained soils in full sun or partial shade. Regular watering encourages growth. Tolerates drought and frost once established. Great for coastal and embankment planting. Excellent container plant.

Propagation Information: No pre-treatment required. Seed germinates readily 4-12 weeks. Sow seed in mix 3:1 Perlite:Peat and cover the depth of the seed. Keep moist until germination occurs. Best to sow in individual containers to prevent damage to the root system when transplanting. Drench seed with a fungicide after sowing to prevent "Damping Off'.
