Grevillea striata

Description

A beautiful, long lived (150+ years) small tree from inland Australia. It has a rough bark, narrow silvery-grey leaves and cylindrical creamy white scented flowers approx 4-8" long. The tree was called "Beefwood" because the early settlers thought the heartwood of the tree resembled a piece of beef! Grows near creeks or hillsides in low rainfall areas. All parts of the tree were used by Aborigines and early settlers alike. Plants are slow growing but long-lived. This is a handsome tree for hot, dry gardens from California to Texas.
